Miss Reminic is by the legendary American champion Reminic from Nonda Bounce Back. She is the only daughter of Reminic in Australia.

Reminic is a son of the greatest cowhorse mare of all time, Greg Ward’s legendary Fillinic (click on Fillinic to go straight to a story from the American Western Horseman’s collection of the greatest Quarter Horses in history.)

During an extensive visit to Texas and California some years ago, we had the privilege of inspecting Reminic and many of his off-spring. We believe that Reminic, and the best of his progeny, are some of the finest cattle horses we have ever witnessed anywhere in the world.

In what was a first of its kind in Australia, this mare was bred using shipped chilled semen flown in from Texas.

Miss Reminic has been worked under saddle and has done light mustering. She is highly intelligent, kind and loves people. We did not send Miss Reminic out to be trained for a very good reason. In 2001, the same year that she was foaled, we purchased Plaintree Farms and, our major commitment, time and resources have been focused in developing a boutique thoroughbred stud.

This young mare is a wonderful investment. She offers a direct outcross to Fillinic, widely considered to be the greatest cowhorse mare ever seen in America. As well as this, she is from Nonda Bounceback, who was campaigned by Peter Comisky to place 2nd (by one and a half points) in the Novice at the ACA National Finals.

Bounceback (Rivoli Rex – Nonda Night Bird) is a half sister to Nonda Sweet Dreams, the dam of Nonda Let’s Talk Later, winner of the 2000 Warwick Gold Cup (Terry Hall) This is Nonda’s finest family of genuine, tough cattle horses.

This mare will make a wonderful contribution to Australia’s most forward thinking breeders searching for the next generation of champions in challenge, camp drafting and reining. She is currently in foal to our impressive first season sire Nonda Redford (Semipaltinsk – Nonda Let’s Talk Later) which makes her a valuable two-in-one package for the serious investor. A once in a lifetime mare.

“Miss Reminic is an own daughter of the legendary Reminic, considered one of the greats by the leading cowhorse trainers and breeders in America. She was conceived through chilled semen here in Australia. Reminic is a son of Fillinic, the extraordinary cowhorse champion owned by Greg Ward who was considered not only one of the finest mares ever seen in competition but also one of the greatest foundation mares of her breed. She has bred a long line of champion cowhorses who have not only won the American Reined Cow Horse Futurity a number of times but also continued to pass her powerful influence on.

Miss Reminic is from Nonda Bounceback, a daughter of our finest mare family. Bounceback ran 2nd in Novice at the ACA National Finals Campadraft (Peter Comisky) and is a half sister to Sweet Dreams, dam of Nonda Let’s Talk Later, winner of the Warwick Gold Cup, Australia’s greatest campdraft.

Her first foal is Nonda Bobbinic (LOT 1) is outstanding. She is currently empty and ready to breed in the 2009 season.” – Heather Pascoe

NRCHA 2001 Hall of Fame Recipient: Fillinic

The NRCHA is built upon a foundation that was laid not only by the founding members. The stock horses the association revolves around were just as instrumental, and this year the first horse ever was inducted into the Hall Of Fame. Many horses pass through our lives, but some have such an impact, their memory remains forever burning like a star on the horizon. Laura Ward said: “A man is lucky to have one great horse in his lifetime… she gave us a lifetime of greatness, we will never forget her. With all our love; to Fillinic.”

Greg Ward had just returned from riding cross-country in the spring of 1961 when he found a little sorrel mare, covered with wire scars tied to his fence. She had dug a hole big enough to bury 2 of her in, was covered in lather, nervous, and her name was Fillinic. At that point Greg had no idea he was looking at the horse that would change not only his life, but the entire face of the cow horse industry forever.

That purchase would turn into one of the most significant horse deals ever known, and would change the reined cow horse industry forever. Fillinic was an amazing individual, but her true impact goes far beyond her domination in the arena, and the legacy she has left on this earth through her offspring. Fillinic’s most significant contribution was teaching Greg to master the reined cow horse. After many years and countless championships, many on Fillinic offspring, Greg became affectionately known as The Master. Unlike most trainers who learned from their peers, Greg gave all the credit to Fillinic. This little sorrel mare was the one who taught The Master, and he passed her wisdom onto us.

When they purchased Fillinic in February of 1962, she had only the remainder of that year to be shown in the Hackamore, so she was taken to the arena. They won at Salinas, Santa Maria, and the Cow Palace; Championship saddles at all.

Fillinic was immediately bred to Wayward Wind and was put into the bridle while she was in gestation. Aminic was her first foal, and after he was weaned, she went to her first show in the bridle, and brought home the Championship saddle from Santa Maria, and the Salinas Rodeo. She then went on to the Cow Palace where they were named Champion of the Lightweight Stock Horse Division. In the following year, 1966, she was named the California Reined Cow Horse Champion Bridle Horse while winning all the big ones along the way. In 1967 she won the Frank Borges Memorial Trophy at Reno and was retired after repeating her Championship at the Cow Palace for the second year in a row.

Greg said that Fillinic was like a storybook for them, and there’s no price on that sentimental attachment. She was never for sale. Other trainers told Greg that a professional horseman should never get that attached to a horse, but he told them, that’s just the way it is… it’d be like selling one of my kids.

Fillinic was born on the Goodyear Farms in Litchfield, Arizona on July 7th 1957, ironically, just one day after Greg and Laura were married. She was sired by Arizona Junie and out of the mare Alouette who was by a Thoroughbred stallion named Master Boss. Fillinics parentage didn’t follow the usual cow horse breeding but that didn’t get in her way… she was an individual. Fillinic was bred to a hot young stallion that Greg had in training named Sugar Vandy which proved to be the perfect cross. Her 2nd foal, Sugarnic, went on to win the California Reined Cow Horse Association’s Snaffle Bit Futurity, and continued showing and became the 1974 and 1975 reserve champion bridle horse and the 1975 and 1976 World Champion Stock Horse. Sugarnic was bred to Doc’s Remedy and produced Sugar Remedy, who became the 1981 Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion. Sugar Remedy produced the 1988 Snaffle Bit Futurity Reserve Champion Peppy Remedy, who was the future dam of Reminics Pep, Greg’s 1998 Futurity Champion. Amazingly, all of these Champions came from just one of Fillinic’s offspring.

Fillinic’s next foal was Wininic who after her show career produced the phenomenal stallion Master Remedy who has earned more than $177,000 and is on many leading sires lists. Her next foals were Picinic, Quickinic, and her final cross with Sugar Vandy, Anuthernic. Anuthernic produced the brilliant Pepinic who was the reserve champion at the 1983 National Cutting Horse Association Futurity. In the spring of 1977 Fillinic was bred to the NCHA Derby Champion Doc’s Remedy, and the result was Reminic. Reminic went on to earn over $90,000 in the cutting pen, and has gone on to become one of the most respected sires in the Cutting, Reining and Reined Cow Horse industries. Fillinic’s final foal was Fillynic, and after a short show career she had earned over $50,000 before entering the Ward Ranch breeding program. Over 200 descendants of this incredible mare have gone on to become major money earners in NCHA, NRHA, NRCHA, and AQHA events.

As a tribute to Greg, the 1999 Snaffle Bit Futurity poster features him on four futurity champions, and all of them go back to Fillinic. August 2nd of 1983 is a date that put an incredible silence over the Ward Ranch. Bobby Cotta came in from the pasture where he had found Fillinic down with a severely broken leg. It was apparent that she would have to be put down.

As irony would have it, Fillinic stood like bookends on Greg’s career. She was the one who started it all, and was also there at the end. For the horse that provided Greg’s last Championship ride, Magic, was a gift from Fillinic, top and bottom. It was if she knew her lifelong friend’s time was drawing near, and she wanted him to leave the arena with a bang; Fillinic style!

Fillinic was literally dropped off at Greg and Laura Ward’s doorstep, and she set into motion a chain of events that would mold the face of the reined cow horse world. Her presence on the earth is felt every day; not only through her offspring, but also by the training methods she helped Greg develop. Fillinic not only gave us great horses, but a great trainer, and mentor, as well… and he would be proud of yet another accomplishment by this unstoppable little mare.

Fillinic taught Greg to ride and communicate with horses, and Greg has in turn passed Fillinic’s lessons onto us. So every time you swing your leg over a cow horse, look up to the sky, tip your hat back, and say thanks Fillinic, and welcome to the Hall Of Fame.

First Dam

Nonda Bounceback (Rivoli Rex – Nonda Night Bird)

Nonda Bounceback (Rivoli Rex-Nonda Night Bird) was originally sold by Nonda as a 2YO. She was later drafted by champion camp drafter Peter Comisky, who had a very high opinion of the mare. Bounceback placed second (by one and a hlaf points) in the Novice Draft at the ACA National Titles. This mare was later re-purchased by Nonda to join their brood mare band where she proved to be an extremely successful acquisition. Her progeny include two outstanding young sires, Nonda Military Cross (Acres Destiny) owned by Mr David Rathie and successfully campaigned by Mick Connelly and Nonda Spider in the Swag (Nonda Swag) who is a successful sire in Western Australia. Now 21, she has been retired from the brood mare band for a number of years and lives in retirement as an Aunty for a young thoroughbred filly.

Second Dam

Nonda Night Bird (Nonda Skywatch – Nonda Cuddles)

Pedigree Notes

Nonda Night Bird was an exceptional type of mare. This original taproot family was developed by the Brown family in 1923 at Nonda Downs station, Julia Creek N.W. Qld. They were an outstanding line of camp drafters, station stock horses and all-rounders with tremendous heart and stamina.

Third Dam

Nonda Cuddles (Skymark – Nonda Blue Mist)

Nonda Cuddles was a brilliant camp mare at Nonda who became a wonderful producer. This family has been owned and bred by members of the Brown family at Nonda Downs for 83 years: NH Brown (1923-1953) Reg Brown (1953-1975) Heather Brown (1975-2006).

The Rotorua family has always been regarded as Nonda’s best family. This family carries outstanding thoroughbred blood – the kind of bush thoroughbred that passed on speed, conformation and temperament.

Due to the distance and isolation of Nonda Downs, a station in North West Queensland, Nonda Cuddles was only ever bred to the one stallion, the thoroughbred Skywatch (Lumley Road – Countess Lloyda).

What Nonda Cuddles might have achieved if she had the opportunity  to be bred to some of the more popular campdraft sires in the South can only be left to the imagination.

Her foals include:

  • Nonda Bull Mitchell (Skywatch): station camp horse and picnic race horse
  • Nonda Flynn (Skywatch)– station camp horse
  • Nonda Jeannie Gunn (Skywatch)– halter winner at Brisbane RNA
  • Nonda Daisy Bates (Skywatch) – broodmare
  • Nonda Nellie Melba (Skywatch)– broodmare
  • Nonda Salute (Skywatch) – gelding
  • NONDA NIGHT BIRD (Skywatch)
    • Shown by champion trainer Ian Francis.
    • 2YO: Junior State Champion Working Horse of Qld
    • 3Y0: won the Station Hack Class at Brisbane Royal Show: second at Widgee Futurity to another Nonda owned Filly.
    • 4Y0: Retired to stud
  • NONDA NATIVE SON (Skywatch)
    • Remarkably tough, handsome horse who won a legion of admirers. He was used as a station camp horse at Nonda Downs during the years when the BTEC clean-up campaign was under way, and his speciality was running bulls. He was one of the greatest natural horses on cattle we have ever bred.
    • He was shown at Cloncurry Show and Hughenden Show, where he won the Champion Stock Horse stallion on both occasions.
    • His only other outing was in the Winton to Longreach Endurance Ride. Heather Brown was asked by outback legend RM Williams to accompany him for part of the ride and write about it for the Weekend Australian in order to promote the then yet-to-be-built Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame in Longreach.
    • Then a 6YO – and coming off the back of a long winter muster on the station – Native Son started the Ride without any special training. He vetted through at Eversham, 96 miles down the road, and the next day completed the 35 miles from Maneroo station into Longreach in 2 hours and 11 minutes. He vetted through again and won the admiration of both vets and horsemen everywhere.
    • In a stud career cut tragically short by his early death (32 registered foals) Native Son managed to sire:
      • NONDA BEBOPALOOPA (Charlie Brook) Champion Polocrosse Horse of Australia
      • WOODBRIDGE GAZELLE winner of the prestigious Victorian Barastoc Horse of the Year.
      • NONDA NATIVE WHIMSEY – won Station Hack at the Brisbane Royal Show in 1983, the only horse from the north to ever do so. Trained by Ian Francis, she also won another 8 working stock horse events.
