Height: 15 hh
Registration: ASHS NO 159072
Comments
This is an exceptional young mare. She is a magnificent type with outstanding conformation, athleticism and temperament. Her pedigree is a balance of the best of two great Australian female families – Nonda’s Rotorua family and the Haydon’s Widden Lass family. These families have been carefully blended with American bloodlines already noted for producing successful campdrafters in Australia.
This is a fully trained and educated mare ready to make her mark in competition. She has been educated by two of Australia’s greatest horsemen, Michael Wilson and Terry Hall.
Five Star was trained by Michael Wilson for the 2005 Cloncurry Stockmen’s Challenge. She made the Top Ten in the Dry Work section (Scored 80: the highest score in the round was 85.5) and chalked up an 80 in the cattle work when she struck a tough beast. Her final score was just beneath the cut to make the final.
She has been ridden extensively by Terry Hall and spent a lot of time with him on the road with cattle. According to Terry, “she goes pretty good” and he has described her as being “suitable as a ladies mare.”
Five Star returned to Plaintree when we needed an all-round riding horse to lead our young Thoroughbreds being prepared for the racetrack. She handled the task with ease and has always been ridden by women.
She has never been to stud and will make an exceptional broodmare for the leading Australian breeder.
“This is a beautiful mare with a serious career in front of her. She has it all: she was fully trained for the Cloncurry Stockmen’s Challenge by Michael Wilson and she has worked a lot of cattle on the road with Terry Hall. She has a solid pedigree, carries two great Australian female families and will be worth her weight in gold as a broodmare. She is great to ride, smooth as silk, and she is a pleasure to be around. She has always been carefully looked after and we think a mare like this really deserves the kind of opportunity that a serious horseman or horsewoman can give her.”

Sire
Nonda Swag
Won first round Winton Novice, also won cut out, Won Allora Novice. 2nd Brunette Downs Novice ridden by Terry Hall, Went droving with Terry Hall.
Travelled on foot with 3000 steers from Cloncurry to Urandangie in the Channel Country. Trucked back to Cloncurry then walked 1800 steers from near Cloncurry to Blackall in Central Queensland. Ridden every second day (average day: 20 to 30 miles riding). Terry Hall noted his extreme soundness and toughness. He completed the trip without a day off for lameness or soreness. At the end of this trip he drafted in the Stallion Draft at Warwick, where he scored an 82 on a tough beast.
His progeny include NONDA FIVE STAR (mare by Nonda Swag) who has been drafting with Terry Hall.
Dam
First Dam
Marie Laveau (now deceased) was described by many good judges as ‘probably the loveliest daughter of Tassa Lena in Australia.’ Her early demise was a great loss to the breeding industry.
Second Dam
Hula Hoop was an extremely athletic mare successfully campaigned by her owner in camp drafts, challenges and reining events throughout Central and North Western Queensland.
Third Dam
Yarranoo Rhumba was a full sister to Yarranoo Ragtime (dam of Champion Polocrosse Horse of Australia Nonda Bebopaloopa) and also to Yarranoo Reggae, who was successfully campaigned by champion trainer Ian Francis during the 1980’s as an outstanding young Cowhorse.
Reggae, Ragtime and Rhumba were all bred by the famous breeder Ventry McLennen and sold to Nonda as 2YO’s. The fillies were all daughters of Yarranoo Charm, a daughter of Yarranoo Bangle, one of Mr McLennens most successful broodmares.
Bangles is now considered a Foundation Mare by the Australian Stock Horse Society, such has been her impact on the breed. Bangles was also a grand-daughter of the champion campdrafter Widden Lass, bred by the Haydon family. This is one of the finest campdraft families in Australia.
