A Silent victory

An international flavour to the running of this year’s Moe Cup, Thursday’s $122,000 2050m event won by the in form Lee Freedman trained four-year-old Pure Silence (Sunday Silence Engraver by Miner’s Mark).
Coming off an easy win in a Class 6 race at Kyneton, Pure Silence has now won six of his 13 starts being thought highly enough of last time in to contest the VRC St Leger-G3 and the SA Derby-G1.
Seeming to be more mature this time in, the Strawberry Hill bred bay entire boasts a pedigree that suggests he will go straight on being a son of the influential Sunday Silence and a very well related American mare.
The first foal produced by his dam (who passed hands at this year’s Magic Millions broodmare sales for $275,000), Pure Silence made his way through the yearling sales at the Gold Coast two years ago fetching $900,000.
He is now raced by his breeders with the Vinery and Torryburn Studs (who purchased his dam).
Pure Silence’s dam, Engraver, was served last year by Rock Of Gibraltar and is also the dam of a Johannesburg yearling filly, the $450,000 unraced Danehill three-year-old colt Wegner (also trained by Freedman) and the two-year-old Carnegie filly Left Hander.
Engraver is a daughter of the American stakes winner Heavenly Match, also dam of the John A Morris Handicap-Gr.1 winner Personal Business in turn dam of the Humana Distaff Handicap-Gr.3 winner In Conference.
Heavenly Match was the only winner produced by her dam The Bride but her daughters and granddaughters have proven fine broodmares and what an outstanding pedigree she had her dam the legendary Somethingroyal.
The Bride was by Bold Ruler, making her a full sister to the champion Secretariat and a half sister to the outstanding stallion Sir Gaylord.
